What causes hair loss?

Hair loss can happen for many reasons including:

Age

Your hair grows more slowly as you get older. It may thin, recede or change colour.

Your genes

Known as androgenic alopecia, this is the most common type of hair loss, where your genes cause your hair follicles to shink and eventually stop growing hair. Women may experience overall thinning or a widening parting. Men may develop a receding hairline or a bald spot on the top of the head.

Stress

Major life changes and high levels of stress can cause your hair to shed more quickly than usual, causing hair loss.

Damaging hair treatments

Perms, dyes, relaxers or tightly pulled back hair may damage your hair follicles.

Alopecia areata

This is an autoimmune condition where your own immune system attacks your hair follicles. It can cause hair loss on your head and other parts of the body, including your eyebrows, eyelashes, ears or nose.

Hormonal changes

Childbirth, hormonal contraception, thyroid conditions or polycystic ovary syndrome may disrupt your hormonal balance and cause your hair to thin.

Dietary deficiencies

Insufficient biotin, iron, protein or zinc can affect your hair.

Scalp conditions

Psoriasis or an infection can affect your hair.
